artistic statement

Traveling sets me free, and I find myself most alive, when the culture shock that I'm experiencing is strongest. Painting is my way of capturing, savoring, and expressing these feelings.

Ever since I can remember, I have felt a deep desire to create things. Although it has taken many forms over the years, this need continues to burn within me. Painting fills me with a sense of exhilaration and purpose. It allows me to express feelings that need to be expressed, and otherwise cannot in any other form.

Even though I often start with a certain idea or concept in mind, my unconscious quickly takes over, pulling me in its own direction soon after my brush first sweeps across the canvas.

In the same way, it is often my subconscious that guides me to a particular place and the feelings I had experienced there. It is for this reason that the expressive and somewhat quizzical titles come to me like a revelation during this process. When the title is suddenly revealed to me, it's like a door has opened and I become instantly aware of where it is that my subconscious has led me. These titles then in turn help to lead my viewers in the right direction about where I was, and what I was thinking or feeling at the time of creating a particular piece.
